MP: Over 21 lakh tendu leaf collectors to receive ₹139 crore bonus
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday, 4 October 2026, announced that more than 21 lakh tendu leaf collectors across the state would receive a combined bonus exceeding ₹139 crore. The announcement was made at a training-cum-awareness programme and tendu leaf bonus distribution event for members of Primary Forest Produce Cooperative Societies held in Mandla district.
Bonus Distribution and Key Figures
At the event, Yadav directly transferred a bonus of ₹36.17 crore (₹36,17,37,518) for the year 2024 to 9,04,126 tendu leaf collectors spanning eight forest divisions — East and West Mandla, North and South Seoni, North and South Balaghat, Dindori, and Jabalpur. Additionally, a timber dividend of ₹26.56 lakh was distributed to approximately 40,000 members of 84 forest committees that support the Forest Department in Mandla.
Yadav described nature-worshipping tribal communities as the state's heritage, stating their contribution to protecting and managing forests is incomparable. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to securing the rights, respecting the hard work, and protecting the interests of tribal families and tendu leaf collectors.
What Are Tendu Leaves and Why They Matter
Tendu leaves are used primarily by tribal communities and people from economically weaker sections in rural areas to roll bidis, making tendu leaf collection a critical supplementary livelihood source for lakhs of households across Madhya Pradesh's forested districts. The annual bonus represents a significant income boost beyond the standard collection wages.
Development Projects Worth ₹460 Crore for Mandla
The Chief Minister also presented Mandla district with 74 development works valued at approximately ₹460 crore. This comprised the groundbreaking of 47 projects worth over ₹263 crore and the inauguration of 27 projects worth more than ₹197 crore. Key projects included 19 government high school buildings (₹75.28 crore), a new integrated collector's office (₹33.92 crore), a nursing college building (₹14.80 crore), a Tribal Multipurpose Marketing Centre (₹1 crore), and four Sandipani school buildings in Niwas, Bichhiya, Ghuthas, and Sagar (₹137.11 crore).
Additional Announcements at the Event
Responding to local demands, Yadav announced the opening of government colleges in Mohgaon and Ghughri, minor forest produce processing units in Mandla under the MSME Department, a tiger safari zoo to attract domestic and foreign tourists, and the revival of traditional betel cultivation in the district. Milk cooperatives are also to be established in Mandla to help raise Madhya Pradesh's share of national milk production from 12 per cent to 20 per cent.
Yadav also visited a Farmer Welfare Year exhibition and distributed scooties to meritorious students under the Chief Minister's Scooty Scheme, personally fitting recipients with helmets. The event was inaugurated with the worshipping of girls and garlanding of portraits of Rani Durgavati, Raja Shankar Shah, and Kunwar Raghunath Shah.
The Mandla event signals a broader state push to strengthen tribal welfare and forest-based livelihoods ahead of the upcoming rural electoral season, with the scale of development announcements likely to set the tone for similar district-level programmes across Madhya Pradesh.
