Chennai, Oct 3 (NationPress) The Madras High Court on Friday emphasized the need for rigorous SOPs for political rallies while declining to mandate a CBI investigation into the tragic stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, which resulted in the loss of at least 41 lives last month.
A bench consisting of M. Dhandapani and M. Jothiraman chose not to advance on a petition filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan requesting a CBI inquiry but allowed the petitioner to return to the court if the investigation does not proceed adequately.
“Do not perceive this court as a platform for political disputes,” the court remarked, questioning the petitioner’s standing in the case.
“If affected individuals come to this court, we will provide support,” the court stated, urging the petitioner to allow the initial stages of the investigation into the incident that occurred on September 27 in Karur.
The BJP leader had requested directions from the High Court for a CBI investigation into the incident, alleging that the deaths were due to official negligence.
The High Court issued its order while reviewing multiple petitions, some of which sought increased compensation for the victims.
The bench acknowledged the Tamil Nadu government’s proposition to develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for rallies or meetings, prohibiting events near state or national highways.
The court recommended that future political rallies or meetings held at designated venues must ensure appropriate arrangements for drinking water and sanitation facilities.
Moreover, the bench asserted that escape routes and parking provisions should be established to reduce the risk of stampedes.
The stampede at the TVK party rally in Veluswamypuram has ignited a political conflict in the state following the police’s action against party state general secretary Bussy Anand.
Vijay has alleged a conspiracy behind the unfortunate event, while Chief Minister M.K. Stalin accused opposition parties of attempting to leverage tragedies for political gain.
