Mumbai, Nov 21 (NationPress) The Maharashtra government established a committee on Friday to explore the possibility of providing assistance based on employment generated in finished products within the textile sector.
This committee will be led by the state Textile Commissioner and includes representatives from IIT (Mumbai), VJTI (Mumbai), Sasmiria (Mumbai), DKTE (Ichalkaranji), the Bombay Textile Research Association (Mumbai), and the joint commissioner of the state textile commissionerate as the member secretary.
A government resolution was released by the Department for Cooperation, Marketing and Textile on Friday regarding this initiative.
The committee is tasked with studying and presenting a report to the government within three months, focusing on supporting textile industry units based on the employment created through finished products.
It will investigate the potential for offering subsidies to textile industry units in Maharashtra based on employment levels in finished products.
The government resolution emphasizes the necessity of developing the textile industry in Maharashtra to seize new and evolving opportunities in the fast-paced global business landscape.
To facilitate this, the Integrated and Sustainable Textile Industry Policy 2023-28 was introduced, which will span five years.
“This policy provides capital subsidies to textile industry units according to the textile manufacturing chain, textile processing components, project locations within the state, establishment of textile zones, and the availability of inputs for the textile sector. Maharashtra has been segmented into four distinct zones under this policy, with capital subsidies allocated based on these zones,” the government resolution stated.
Furthermore, during discussions regarding the Governor's Address in the Budget session of the Maharashtra Legislature in 2025, the Chief Minister assured the Legislative Assembly: "A recommendation has been made to provide assistance based on the number of individuals employed in finished products. This will definitely be taken into consideration."
The committee was established in line with the Chief Minister’s assurance.
Sources from the Textile Department noted that Maharashtra ranks among the top textile-producing states in India.
The state accounts for 10.4% of the nation’s overall textile and apparel production and contributes 10.2% of employment in this sector. The Integrated and Sustainable Textile Policy 2023-28 aims to invigorate both existing textile manufacturing units and those interested in establishing new plants.
The policy also seeks to elevate cotton processing in the state from 30% to 80% within the next five years and enhance the entire textile value chain through advanced infrastructure and technological advancements.
The objective of the policy is to attract an investment of Rs 25,000 crore and generate employment opportunities for up to 5 lakh individuals over the next five years.
