Nagpur, Dec 11 (NationPress) Maharashtra's School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse announced in the state Assembly on Thursday that the government is enhancing the safety and security measures in schools throughout the state by installing CCTV cameras and providing additional essential safety infrastructure.
In response to a query from NCP legislator Sulabha Khodke, the minister revealed that, following directives from the High Court, a Government Resolution (GR) was enacted on May 13 mandating the installation of CCTV cameras to ensure student safety in all educational institutions.
This initiative encompasses schools of all types and management, enforcing comprehensive safety protocols.
The government acknowledged that a significant reason for insufficient safety in schools is the absence of School Safety Committees, Complaint Boxes, and first-aid facilities in numerous institutions.
According to the minister, a total of 60,049 government schools managed by local self-governing bodies and 29,049 private schools in the state have already set up CCTV cameras. Additionally, 45,677 teachers and non-teaching staff have registered in the Teachers-Staff Database.
Almost 4,888 schools are now registered under the School-Portal. Over 1,03,665 School Safety Committees and 1,03,703 Parent-Teacher Associations have been established. Furthermore, 1,03,703 schools have confirmed their awareness and adherence to the POCSO Act and child protection guidelines.
The state government has allocated Rs 18 crore for the procurement and installation of CCTV cameras in 16 Tribal Development Department (TDD) ashram schools, with installation costs estimated between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh per school. In the Amravati District, the installation of CCTVs in 27 government schools was completed at a cost of Rs 2 crore through the 'Super Computer' company.
Palghar District has submitted a request for Rs 44 lakh from the Zilla Parishad to the District Collector for CCTV installation. Administrative approval for Rs 14 crore (80% of the total cost) was granted in the 2018-19 financial year, and the tender process is currently in progress. Additionally, 63 schools in the Amravati district are also in the process of installing CCTVs.
Minister Bhuse stated that initiatives concerning student security and safety are being implemented statewide in accordance with the May 13 GR, and ongoing actions are being taken.
However, opposition members have strongly advocated for accelerating the installation of CCTV cameras, citing implementation delays and a deficiency of dedicated funding across most schools in the state.
