Mumbai, March 24 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution on Monday, urging the Centre to grant the esteemed Bharat Ratna award to social reformers Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule posthumously.
The resolution was introduced by BJP minister Jaikumar Rawal.
In the resolution, the government stated: “The Bharat Ratna is the country’s highest civilian award, bestowed for exceptional contributions in various fields. Thinkers, scholars, industrialists, writers, and social workers in politics, art, literature, and science are recognized with this honor. Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule have significantly improved the lives of marginalized and underprivileged communities, dedicating their lives to social welfare and advocating for poverty alleviation and free education.”
It further emphasized that it is fitting to honor Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule posthumously with the prestigious Bharat Ratna award.
“Following Rule 110 of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly guidelines, we recommend the Government of India confer the highest honor of 'Bharat Ratna' posthumously to Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule,” the resolution stated.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar remarked that the Assembly's resolution is historic, enhancing Maharashtra's reputation as an advanced, progressive, and reformist state and elevating the significance of the 'Bharat Ratna' award.
“Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule paved the way for women’s education by establishing the first girls' school in Pune. Today, numerous women occupy significant roles across sectors such as agriculture, education, science, research, politics, and social work, contributing to national development,” he noted.
The Deputy Chief Minister added that the credit for this progress goes to the vision and hard work demonstrated by Mahatma Phule and Savitribai during their era.
“The couple's extraordinary efforts to promote education among the underprivileged and Bahujan communities ensure their legacy as ‘Mahatmas’ endures for all citizens, including farmers and the working class,” the Deputy Chief Minister concluded.
