Maharashtra clears 547-km Vidarbha expressway network, 4 projects approved
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Maharashtra's Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Thursday, 14 May granted administrative approval for four access-controlled expressway projects in the Vidarbha region, covering a combined length of 547 km. The corridors are designed to link Maharashtra's eastern and western borders through high-speed connectivity, marking a significant infrastructure push for one of the state's historically underserved regions.
The Four Approved Projects
The approved expressways are the Nagpur–Gondia Expressway, the Bhandara–Gadchiroli Expressway, the Nagpur–Chandrapur Expressway, and the Navegaon More–Konsari to Surjagarh Greenfield Road. Together, they form an integrated east-west corridor framework for Vidarbha, a landlocked region that has long lagged behind Maharashtra's coastal districts in infrastructure investment.
CM Fadnavis directed officials to accelerate the next steps for all four projects and ensure timely completion. He specifically instructed that the Navegaon More–Surjagarh route — described as critical for mineral transport — be connected to the Samruddhi Mahamarg, Maharashtra's flagship 701-km expressway linking Mumbai and Nagpur.
Tunnel Road Study for Konkan Link
In an additional directive, Fadnavis asked officials to study a proposed tunnel road that would connect western Maharashtra to the Konkan region and prepare a detailed project presentation. No timeline or cost estimate for the tunnel study was announced at this stage.
'By prioritising seamless infrastructure, the state is advancing towards a future defined by integrated, high-speed and inclusive development,' Fadnavis said at the event.
Africa India Development Zone at Kharghar
On the same day, CM Fadnavis presided over the signing of an agreement between the Government of Maharashtra — through the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) — and the Africa India Economic Foundation. The pact enables the formation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop the Africa India International Development Zone at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
Key components of the zone include the AIBC Tower to house offices for 54 African nations and Indian stakeholders, convention and exhibition facilities, cultural and heritage centres, incubation hubs, and MSME development infrastructure to facilitate Africa–India trade.
₹1,14,000 Crore AI and Green Data Centre Investment
Separately, the Chief Minister also presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Maharashtra (Industries Department) and AM Intelligence Labs Pvt Ltd for a 500 MW Integrated Green Data Centre Park and Artificial Intelligence Compute Hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The proposed investment stands at ₹1,14,000 crore and is expected to generate 800 jobs, according to the Chief Minister's Office. The facility will run entirely on renewable energy and will support large-scale AI model training, data processing, and cloud-based AI services. Officials said the project is intended to position Maharashtra as a leading destination for AI infrastructure and India's broader digital economy.
With approvals spanning expressways, international trade zones, and green technology, Thursday's announcements signal an accelerated infrastructure agenda for Maharashtra ahead of the state's next budget cycle.
