Mumbai, July 7 (NationPress) The Industry and Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant revealed in the state assembly on Monday that the Maharashtra government is set to establish a village dedicated to Marathi poetry and literature in Kashmir.
“The government has also resolved to create a Marathi study centre at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi for the advancement and sharing of the Marathi language,” he stated.
Addressing a debate on a motion proposed by assembly members from the treasury bench under legislative assembly rule 293, the minister emphasized that the government is actively pursuing various initiatives for the growth and promotion of the Marathi language.
He noted that the central government has recently recognized Marathi as a classical language. Moreover, a budget of Rs 100 crore has been allocated for the Marathi Language Bhavan, with construction already underway and a sub-centre planned in Airoli.
“The state government is committed to promoting Marathi both nationally and internationally. A World Marathi Conference has been organized, and Brihanmarathi Mandals are being established in all 74 countries where Marathi is spoken. Currently, these mandals operate in only 17 locations. Plans for a separate board to distribute grants for the enhancement of the Marathi language have also been set in motion,” he pointed out.
In addition to Marathi, the Prakrit language has also been granted classical status by the central government. Similar funding for the preservation and development of Prakrit will be provided, just like for Marathi. The funding for the Marathi Language Development Department has been doubled, as stated by the minister.
Meanwhile, the Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar mentioned in the assembly that the historic sword belonging to Maratha Sardar Raghuji Raje Bhosale will be returned to Maharashtra from London by the end of July or before August 15.
The state government is making arrangements for this iconic sword, a symbol of Maratha history, pride, and valor, to be brought back home and honored for the people of Maharashtra.
Shelar asserted, “The historic sword of the courageous Maratha Sardar Raghuji Raje Bhosale, a cherished emblem of Maharashtra’s heritage, was successfully reclaimed through the tireless efforts of the Cultural Affairs Department. This sword, a testament to our history and Maratha bravery, will return to its rightful place.”
“On April 29, 2025, the sword was listed for auction by Sotheby’s in London. Promptly, under the direction of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Maharashtra government initiated the necessary procedures. With the assistance of Praveen Challa, a successful bid was made on behalf of the state, acquiring the sword for Rs 69,94,437 (including taxes). The agreement was secured, and the expenditure was formally authorized on May 21, 2025,” stated the minister.
Raghuji Bhosale I was the founder of the Nagpur Bhosale royal lineage, serving as a commander in the Maratha army from 1695 to 1755 under the reign of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, who honored him with the esteemed title 'Sena Saheb Subha' for his bravery and military prowess.
The sword, adorned with his engraved name and featuring a gold hilt, was wielded by him during battles that marked an era of Maratha heroism. It is believed to have left India during colonial times through the East India Company, according to the minister.
