Kolkata, July 20 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has paved the way for the upcoming Trinamool Congress annual Martyrs’ Day rally, scheduled for Monday, emphasizing that the focus of her speech will be on the alleged mistreatment of Bengali-speaking individuals in states governed by the BJP.
The Chief Minister inspected the rally site on Sunday and, while addressing the media, hinted at the topics she intends to discuss during her speech.
"It is unacceptable to label individuals as thieves and dacoits. Bengali-speaking individuals are being unfairly targeted. We honor all languages and respect the people of every state. However, incarcerating Bengali-speaking individuals is unjust. I will elaborate on this tomorrow," she stated.
Additionally, she expressed her discontent regarding a recent ruling by a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, which imposed restrictions on the Martyrs’ Day rally, commemorating the 13 individuals who lost their lives during a protest led by the West Bengal Youth Congress, then directed by Mamata Banerjee, on July 21, 1993.
Without naming anyone, the Chief Minister subtly criticized those who petitioned the Calcutta High Court to prevent her party from hosting the event at that location.
"We hold our event here because 13 lives were lost at this site in 1993. Blood was shed right here. That’s why we commemorate our Martyrs’ Day event here. Yet, some individuals have an issue with us gathering here. However, they show no concern when unauthorized ‘March to Nabanna (state secretariat)’ events take place," she remarked.
Last week, the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh not only deliberated on this year’s Martyrs’ Day rally but also recommended that the Trinamool Congress leadership contemplate a different venue for future events.
In her remarks, the Chief Minister also indirectly criticized the BJP for planning a concurrent event in Siliguri, North Bengal, on Monday as a counter to the Trinamool Congress’s Martyrs’ Day rally. "We do not conduct parallel events when they hold theirs with their central leaders in attendance," she added.
