Imphal, June 13 (NationPress) As the situation in Manipur continues to improve, the state government has reinstated mobile internet and data services in five valley districts, according to an official announcement.
The Commissioner (Home), N. Ashok Kumar, stated in an order that due to the overall enhancement of law and order in these districts and the difficulties faced by the public during the internet service suspension, the government has decided to remove any form of internet blockade in these areas. The five districts in the Imphal valley include Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
On June 10, the district administrations of these five valley districts eased the indefinite curfew from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Following the arrest of Meitei radical outfit Arambai Tenggol leader, Ashem Kanan Singh (46) by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on June 7, violent protests erupted in the districts.
In a bid to restore order, the state government imposed a ban on mobile internet and data services at midnight on June 7 for five days, along with an indefinite curfew affecting these Imphal valley districts, predominantly inhabited by the Meitei community.
To manage the unrest, a significant presence of Central and state forces, led by senior officials, was deployed in the affected areas, particularly in Imphal East and Imphal West.
Meanwhile, on June 10, the Arambai Tenggol announced a relaxation of their 10-day shutdown in Manipur, originally called from June 8, in protest against the arrest of their senior leader and the legal actions taken by security forces. A spokesperson for the group stated that while the shutdown was lifted, protests would continue in a democratic manner.
The Manipur Police previously reported that Arambai Tenggol leader Ashem Kanan Singh was apprehended by the CBI in Imphal and transferred to Guwahati. A statement from the police noted that Singh was a Head Constable in the Manipur Police until his termination on March 3 of this year due to his involvement in various criminal activities, including cross-border arms smuggling. He was charged with numerous serious offenses and unlawful activities, as indicated in the police statement.
