New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Violence carried out by Left Wing Extremists (LWE) has seen a significant drop of 47 percent in Chhattisgarh, with only 122 incidents reported in 2024, compared to a staggering 499 incidents in 2010, according to Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai on Tuesday.

In response to a query in the Lok Sabha, the MoS highlighted that the reduction in Maoist-related violence has also led to a 64 percent decrease in fatalities among civilians and security personnel, falling from 343 deaths in 2010 to 122 deaths in 2024.

Additionally, a broader decline in Maoist violence has been noted across the nation, with incidents falling by 81 percent in 2024, resulting in 150 incidents compared to 1,936 incidents in 2010.

The associated deaths of civilians and security forces have also plummeted by 85 percent during this timeframe, decreasing from 1,005 deaths in 2010 to 150 deaths in 2024, according to the MoS.

To combat the LWE issue, a National Policy and Action Plan was implemented in 2015. This plan includes a comprehensive strategy that combines security measures, developmental initiatives, and ensuring the rights and entitlements of local communities.

On the security front, the Central government supports LWE-affected states by providing Central Armed Police battalions, training, and funds for modernizing state police forces, along with equipment, arms, intelligence sharing, and the establishment of fortified police stations, the MoS noted.

The effective execution of the National Policy and Action Plan has led to a consistent decline in Maoist activities concerning both geographical spread and violence, as stated by the MoS.

There has been a progressive reduction in the number of districts impacted by LWE. Due to the improving conditions, three assessments of LWE-affected districts have been conducted in the past six years, showing a decline from 126 districts in April 2018 to 90 districts in July 2021 and further down to 38 districts in April 2024.
