Media Must Ensure Accountability from MPs: V-P Dhankhar

New Delhi, Dec 24 (NationPress) Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar conveyed his distress regarding the squandered business hours in Parliament and appealed to the media to apply pressure on public representatives, insisting on accountability in our democratic framework.

“The media has the power to resonate with the populace and create pressure on public officials, as it is essential to uphold the integrity of these temples of democracy,” he stated while addressing women media professionals.

Expressing concern over the absence of substantial debates, he remarked, “Have you observed any significant debate in Parliament over the past few decades? Have you noticed any noteworthy contributions made on the floor of the House?”

“We are in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. We have adapted to disorder masquerading as order. Nevertheless, accountability must be enforced by the media, for it is the sole channel to connect with the broader public,” he expressed.

Stating his high hopes for the media, he noted, “The media can resonate with the masses and exert pressure on public representatives, as it is crucial to respect the sanctity of these temples of democracy.”

Highlighting the media's pivotal role in democracy, he stated, “You are the last bastion of hope because two elements are indispensable for a thriving democracy. The first is the right to expression. If expression is limited, compromised, or subjected to coercion, it contradicts the evolution of democracy. The second is dialogue. This implies that before vocalizing your stance, you must listen to opposing viewpoints. If these two elements are absent, democracy cannot be nurtured or flourish.”

Discussing women’s reservation, he mentioned, “A monumental shift occurred in 2023 after three decades of challenges. A transformative Constitutional Amendment was enacted, ensuring one-third reservation for women in State Legislatures and the Lok Sabha. This will become a tangible reality. It marks a significant Amrit Kaal for women in Indian democracy.

“You will play a vital role in policy-making, decision-making, and governance, owing to your strength in parliamentary institutions! It pains me to hear individuals quickly remarking, ‘Why can’t you implement it immediately?’ Nothing could be more damaging to the public interest than informed individuals capitalizing on the ignorance of the larger populace to promote their political ideologies,” he concluded.
