Shillong, June 18 (NationPress) Over three weeks have passed since the shocking murder of Indore entrepreneur Raja Raghuvanshi, prompting the Meghalaya government to mandate that all homestays, resorts, and families document the details of every tourist they accommodate, officials revealed on Wednesday.
A senior representative from the Meghalaya Tourism Department stated that the state government has instructed all homestays, resorts, and even private landlords to compulsorily log all visitors and their necessary information.
“The administration aims to ensure that all homestay and accommodation providers now have to register tourists, visitors, and guests using the tourism application, which is already utilized by 60% of homestay operators and accommodation facilities,” the official informed IANS.
If homestay and resort proprietors fail to record the details of tourists and guests, it will be considered a legal offense, placing the responsibility on the accommodation owner.
The official also mentioned that the state government has recently imposed limitations on the hiring of private vehicles by tourists planning to drive themselves while exploring the area.
Previously, on June 13, the Meghalaya government decided to fortify existing laws to enhance the safety of local residents and prevent the infiltration of criminal elements posing as tourists.
Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh stated that the council of ministers convened by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on June 13 opted to review the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016, an established state law, to introduce stricter provisions aimed at minimizing the risk of criminal elements entering Meghalaya as tourists.
This government initiative follows the brutal murder of Raja Raghuvanshi (28), who was viciously killed during his honeymoon in the Sohra-Cherrapunji region of the East Khasi Hills district, in a scheme allegedly orchestrated by his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi (24) and her suspected partner Raj Singh Kushwaha (21).
Raja and Sonam went missing on May 23 in Sohra, shortly after checking out from a homestay in Nongriat village.
Sonam and Raja tied the knot in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on May 11 and arrived in Meghalaya via Guwahati on May 20 for their honeymoon, where the young man met his tragic end, with his body disposed of in a deep gorge.
Meanwhile, Sonam along with four other suspects—Kushwaha, Anand Singh Kurmi (23), Akash Rajput (19), and Vishal Singh Chauhan (22)—are scheduled to appear in the District and Sessions Court in Shillong on Thursday after completing eight days of police custody. Authorities will be seeking an extension of their custody, according to an official.
