What Led to the Collapse of an Under-Construction Metro Pillar in Mumbai?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 14 (NationPress) A tragic incident occurred when a section of a parapet wall from an elevated Metro rail bridge fell onto LBS Road in Mulund (West), resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to at least four others. The collapse impacted a passing auto-rickshaw and a car, according to official reports.
The authorities indicated that the incident happened when a section of the parapet wall, approximately measuring 6x4 feet, detached from the elevated structure and fell onto the vehicles below.
This unforeseen collapse triggered panic in the vicinity and necessitated an immediate response from emergency services.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) assured that all essential medical assistance is being provided to those affected by the incident.
Officials confirmed that members of the Metro project team have arrived at the scene and are actively engaged in relief efforts and site security measures in close collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and disaster management authorities.
The BMC's disaster control unit verified the size of the fallen parapet section and stated that rescue and clearance operations were executed swiftly.
Authorities identified the deceased as Ramdhan Yadav.
Among the injured, Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav, aged 45, has been admitted to the intensive care unit and remains in critical condition. The other injured individuals, Mahendra Pratap Yadav, 52, and Deepa Ruhiya, 40, are reported to be stable. Further details regarding the fourth injured person have not yet been disclosed.
The MMRDA has announced that a thorough inquiry has been launched to determine the precise cause of the collapse and to evaluate construction safety protocols and structural stability measures at the site.
"The Metro project team is present at the location and is working on relief operations while ensuring site security in close cooperation with BMC and disaster management officials," stated the MMRDA in an official communication.
Meanwhile, Congress MP and Mumbai Congress President Varsha Gaikwad has voiced serious concerns about public safety in light of the incident. She took to X to express her worries.
"Have the lives of Mumbaikars become so insignificant?... Does the government and MMRDA administration care at all?" she questioned.
"They appear to be merely managing infrastructure and handling PR, but what is the value of Mumbaikars' lives hanging in the balance? Why were safety regulations only theoretical during the Metro project's execution? Why weren't appropriate safety measures implemented for traffic on a busy road?" she added.
"In their rush to showcase rapid Metro progress, is the quality and technical safety being neglected? Who will be held accountable? Each time such incidents occur, we merely witness the theatrics of an 'investigation'. Who will take responsibility? We demand development, but not at the cost of Mumbaikars' lives," Gaikwad concluded.
Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
