Mild Earthquake Strikes Assam, Marking the 11th Tremor in the Northeast in 34 Days

Guwahati, Nov 30 (NationPress) A mild intensity earthquake, registering 2.9 on the Richter scale, impacted Assam's Karbi Anglong district early on Saturday, as per officials.

The Disaster Management officials indicated that the mild tremor was felt in Karbi Anglong and surrounding areas during the early hours of Saturday.

Officials confirmed that there have been no reports of casualties or property damage.

The data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) revealed that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 25 km beneath the surface.

Saturday’s quake in Assam represents the 11th seismic event in various states of the mountainous northeastern region within approximately a month (34 days).

On November 28, another mild quake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck Kiphire district in Nagaland, occurring at a depth of 65 km.

On November 27, a quake recorded at 4.3 on the Richter scale hit Hilly Noney district in Manipur, at a depth of 20 km.

On November 25, a mild earthquake measuring 3.6 struck the northern region of Tripura at a depth of 10 km.

On November 24, an earthquake measuring 3.0 occurred in Assam's Barpeta district at a depth of 5 km.

On the night of November 23, a quake of 3.8 magnitude affected Assam's Dima Hasao district with no reports of casualties or damage.

On November 22, a mild quake measuring 3.6 occurred in Manipur's Bishnupur district, also with no reported damage or casualties.

The depth of this quake was recorded at 10 km.

On November 21, a tremor measuring 3.5 was felt in Arunachal Pradesh's West Kameng district, with no casualties or property damage.

This earthquake struck at a depth of 5 km.

On November 12, a light-intensity earthquake measuring 3.5 shook Sikkim's capital Gangtok and nearby areas.

On the same day, a quake measuring 3.6 hit Karbi Anglong district in Assam at a depth of 20 km.

On October 28, another light quake of 4.3 struck Kamle district in Arunachal Pradesh, occurring at a depth of 10 km.

According to NCS data, over one earthquake per week has affected a northeastern state, with most tremors ranging from 3 to 4 on the Richter scale.

Frequent earthquakes, primarily mild to moderate, in the mountainous northeastern states, particularly in Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur, have raised concerns among authorities, prompting both public and private builders to construct quake-resistant structures.

Seismologists have designated the mountainous northeastern region as the sixth most earthquake-prone belt globally.

In 1950, a significant earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale altered the course of the mighty Brahmaputra river, which flows past the congested city of Guwahati, the main commercial hub of the northeastern region.
