Aizawl, Oct 17 (NationPress) The government of Mizoram has announced plans to transform the town of Thenzawl in the Serchhip district into 'Thenzawl Peace City'. This initiative aims to stimulate both tourism and development, according to officials on Friday.

A senior representative from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) revealed that Chief Minister Lalduhoma convened a meeting with members of a consultancy firm tasked with drafting the Thenzawl Peace City Master Plan.

The Chief Minister articulated that Thenzawl Peace City will be the first meticulously planned city in Mizoram, intended to be a clean, organized, and aesthetically pleasing township that will draw visitors and foster tourism along with balanced urban development.

He stressed the importance of thorough and high-standard planning, encouraging the team to approach the project with dedication and excellence.

Furthermore, he noted that the State Project Monitoring Committee should play a role in evaluating and overseeing the project's advancement as necessary.

The official from the CMO mentioned that during discussions, the consultancy team shared their vast experience in executing similar projects both domestically and internationally, outlining their strategy for creating the Peace City.

Interestingly, the pre-bid inquiries for the project attracted 18 esteemed firms, indicating the significance of this initiative.

Also present at the meeting was K. Sapdanga, who oversees State Home, Urban Development, and Poverty Alleviation.

In related news, the Mizoram government has refuted claims suggesting it is attempting to relocate the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl in the Serchhip district.

A statement from the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government clarified that a “clerical error” in a correspondence from the Centre to the state administration sparked the misunderstanding regarding the supposed capital shift to Thenzawl.

Located approximately 93 km from Aizawl, Thenzawl is a census town representing the Serchhip constituency, where Chief Minister Lalduhoma was elected in both the 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections.

The primary opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), accused the Chief Minister in August of “secretly” attempting to move the state capital and soliciting funds from the Centre to realize this plan.

Point of View

The endeavor to establish Thenzawl as a Peace City is a commendable strategy for enhancing tourism and urban development in Mizoram. This initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable growth and community engagement, aligning with national objectives of regional development.
