PM Modi assures Manipur govt of full support to restore peace
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, 10 October assured the Manipur government of all possible assistance in its efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the conflict-hit northeastern state, according to officials from the Chief Minister's Office. The assurance came when Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh called on the Prime Minister at his official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi.
Key Assurances from the Prime Minister
A senior official of the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said Modi gave the assurance directly to the Chief Minister during their meeting. 'The Prime Minister further assured that every reasonable issue concerning Manipur would be addressed, keeping in mind the aspirations of the people,' the official said. Modi also acknowledged the state government's efforts and noted that the situation in the state has improved.
What Khemchand Singh Briefed the PM On
Chief Minister Khemchand Singh briefed Modi on the state government's key initiatives aimed at restoring stability. He highlighted the resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service and the restoration of free movement of goods-laden trucks on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37) and the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2). He also informed the Prime Minister of his government's sincere efforts to bridge the trust deficit among different communities in the state.
The Chief Minister additionally urged Modi to approve a proposal for converting several state highways into national highways and requested the upgradation of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal to the status of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Khemchand Singh also extended a personal invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Manipur.
Amit Shah and Union Ministers Also Met the CM
The Manipur Chief Minister has been in the national capital since 8 October. On that date, Khemchand Singh held separate meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, discussing various issues related to the state. According to officials, all three Union Ministers told the Chief Minister that they would visit Manipur soon.
Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, 8 October assured the Chief Minister of the Centre's full support in restoring peace and ensuring progress in the state. Shah also appreciated the sustained efforts of the Manipur government to bring peace and normalcy, according to the CMO official.
Significance of the Bus Service Resumption
Inter-state passenger bus services between Manipur, Assam, and Nagaland resumed on 21 August after a gap of more than three years — a development widely seen as a tangible sign of improved ground conditions. This resumption was highlighted by Khemchand Singh as a concrete outcome of the state government's peace-building efforts, bringing relief to ordinary residents who had been cut off from direct overland connectivity to neighbouring states.
This comes amid sustained ethnic tensions that have plagued Manipur for over a year, and the Delhi meetings signal an intensified push by both the state and the Centre to stabilise the situation ahead of a possible Prime Ministerial visit to the state.
