Guwahati, Feb 25 (NationPress) During the Advantage Assam summit on Tuesday, a prominent session titled “Act East, Act Fast, Act First” was hosted, featuring External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar alongside Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In his address, EAM Jaishankar stated that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led administration has swiftly and effectively advanced the development of Assam and all Northeastern states over the past decade.
This session served as a strategic platform to bolster Assam's role in India's Act East Policy, with a focus on improving regional connectivity, enhancing trade, and fortifying cross-border cooperation, highlighting Assam's significance as the gateway to India's Act East initiative.
Opportunities for digital infrastructure growth, trade enhancement, and policy strategies to expedite economic integration with ASEAN and neighboring countries were explored.
The discussions underscored Assam's commitment to evolving into a digitally empowered, seamlessly connected state that fosters regional growth and collaboration.
During his keynote speech, EAM Jaishankar reaffirmed the Central government’s unwavering dedication to the Act East Policy, stressing India's robust diplomatic relations with ASEAN nations.
He also pointed out Assam's vital role in reinforcing infrastructure and economic connections to promote deeper regional integration.
According to the Union Minister, this commitment to development is evident through the establishment and achievement of various goals and specific initiatives.
He noted that PM Modi has taken a personal interest in the Northeast's development, stating: “As you may know, Prime Minister Modi has shown significant personal involvement in the development of the Northeast.”
EAM Jaishankar cited the Purvodaya scheme as an example, claiming it will inject fresh energy, infrastructure, and employment opportunities in different regions.
In his remarks, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized: “Historically, India has maintained profound civilizational ties with East and Southeast Asian nations, with the strongest connections flowing through Assam and the Northeast, creating both a geographical link and a cultural bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia.”
Highlighting Assam's importance, he expressed his vision of transforming Assam into a contributing state to India's growth, ensuring the realization of a Vikshit Assam and Vikshit India by 2047 is swift and seamless.
He stated: “We are celebrating Assam’s achievements and looking forward to its promising future. Our aim is to turn Assam into a state that actively contributes to national progress, rather than one that relies on assistance.”
In a landmark initiative, post-independence, the External Affairs Minister led a high-level delegation of 62 ambassadors and high commissioners to the state, marking a significant milestone in Assam’s global engagement. With steadfast commitment, the state is progressing towards a Vikshit Assam, contributing to a Vikshit Bharat by 2047,” Sarma added.
He remarked that the Central government is working to position Assam as a key hub for trade and industry, actively collaborating with ASEAN nations to refine trade policies, including revising the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) for smoother economic interactions.
The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for his participation in the session and for leading a high-level delegation comprising the Heads of Mission.
