Mohan Bhagwat Urges for Fertility Rate Above 2.1, Warns of Societal Extinction

New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) The chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mohan Bhagwat, made a compelling case on Sunday for sustaining a fertility rate of 2.1, underscoring its importance for the survival of any society.

During his speech at the ‘Kathale Kul (clan) Sammelan’ in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Bhagwat expressed deep concern over the declining population figures and shared examples of languages and communities that disappeared because they failed to adapt over time.

“The population must not drop below 2.1; our nation's population policy was established between 1998 and 2002. The population of any society should not be less than 2.1,” Bhagwat stated.

He further explained that contemporary population science indicates that when a society's fertility rate falls below 2.1, it signifies the onset of its decline.

"The decrease in population is alarming. Modern demographic studies suggest that a society's population (fertility rate) dropping below 2.1 leads to its eventual extinction," remarked the RSS leader.

He advocated for a reproduction rate exceeding 2.1 to secure the longevity of any race.

“We require more than two or three; this is what population science stipulates. The figure is crucial because society must endure,” Bhagwat added.

Significantly, India's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has fallen below 2, according to a recent report. This is particularly noteworthy given that in the 1950s, the TFR was as high as 6 percent, whereas it has now dropped below the replacement level, without any enforced two-child policy.

A total fertility rate of 2.1 is recognized as the replacement rate, a vital element in population expansion. It guarantees the replacement of a woman and her partner upon death, resulting in no overall increase or decrease in numbers.
