Giasuddin Molla files complaint against Abhishek Banerjee, cop in South 24 Parganas
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator and ex-minister Giasuddin Molla has filed a police complaint against TMC general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee and former police officer Mitun Kumar Dey at a local police station in the Magrahat (Paschim) Assembly constituency, South 24 Parganas district. Molla, a three-time legislator who also served as West Bengal Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education in the previous Mamata Banerjee-led cabinet, confirmed the complaint filing on Sunday, 17 May, saying he had stayed silent for years out of fear of retribution from within his own party.
Why Molla Broke His Silence
Molla said he had long suppressed his grievances, fearing physical attacks and harassment by party workers loyal to the TMC leadership. He cited the change in political power in West Bengal as the reason he now felt emboldened to act. “I was in a state of fear, and so I did not dare to open my mouth. I was afraid that I might be attacked and heckled by my own party workers. But now I am filing the police complaint because I have faith in the administration led by the new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari,” Molla said.
Molla had represented the Magrahat (Paschim) constituency continuously from 2011 to 2026 but was denied re-nomination by the TMC for the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections. The party instead fielded Shamim Ahamed Molla, who went on to become one of the 80 TMC legislators in the current Assembly.
Allegations Against the Police Officer
According to Molla, Mitun Kumar Dey, the former sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of the Diamond Harbour subdivision in South 24 Parganas, allegedly targeted local TMC leaders and workers who were unwilling to accept what Molla described as Abhishek Banerjee’s “autocratic” style of running the party.
“A Trinamool Congress worker was severely beaten by Mitun Kumar Dey. He tortured the party workers physically and mentally inside the police station. As the then party legislator, I protested. But it did not work out. On the contrary, Mitun Kumar Dey scolded me and came running to beat me with his baton. I informed both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee about this. But there was no solution,” Molla alleged.
Molla further claimed that Abhishek Banerjee was aware of Dey’s conduct and that Dey had allegedly acted on Banerjee’s instructions — a claim that has not been independently verified. Notably, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had barred Dey from any election-related duty ahead of the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly polls.
Second Case Against Abhishek Banerjee in Days
This complaint comes days after a separate First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Abhishek Banerjee on Friday night at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissariat in North 24 Parganas district. That FIR accuses Banerjee of allegedly inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the Assembly elections — charges the TMC has dismissed as politically motivated.
TMC’s Response
The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has alleged political vendetta, arguing that the fresh wave of complaints against Abhishek Banerjee reflects the changed political climate in the state following the party’s electoral setback. The party has not issued a detailed rebuttal to Molla’s specific allegations as of the time of reporting.
With two separate police complaints now lodged against one of the TMC’s most prominent national faces within a matter of days, the legal and political pressure on Abhishek Banerjee is likely to intensify as the new state administration consolidates its position.
