Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday, 27 July announced a proposed industrial investment of more than ₹11,500 crore for Datia district, making the pledge during an election rally as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified its campaign for the Datia Assembly bypoll. Yadav said the project would accelerate industrial growth and generate large-scale employment for local youth.

What Was Announced

Addressing a gathering of the Kushwaha community at Thandi Sadak, Yadav said the specifics of the project could not be fully disclosed owing to the Model Code of Conduct currently in force. 'Within the next month, Datia will get a new industrial plant involving an investment of more than ₹11,500 crore. I cannot disclose the date and other details because of the Model Code of Conduct, but it will be a major gift for Datia and create new employment opportunities for the youth,' Yadav said.

BJP's Campaign Push

Following the public address, the Chief Minister led a roadshow through Datia city in support of BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari. Former state Home Minister Narottam Mishra, senior BJP leaders, and a large number of party workers joined the procession. Supporters lined the route at multiple points, raising slogans in favour of the party.

The BJP has mounted an aggressive final-phase campaign in the constituency, with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other senior leaders also addressing rallies for the party candidate. Yadav additionally spoke of the government's intent to develop the Gwalior region into a future telecommunications hub.

Why the Bypoll Was Called

The Datia Assembly bypoll was necessitated after former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti was disqualified following his conviction by a court. Polling is scheduled for 30 July, with vote counting set for 3 August. The Indian National Congress (Congress) has also fielded its top leadership in the constituency, making this one of the more closely watched electoral contests in Madhya Pradesh this season.

Political Context

The announcement of a large industrial investment on the eve of polling has drawn attention, given that the Model Code of Conduct restricts parties from making policy announcements that could influence voters. Yadav's decision to cite the code while simultaneously announcing the figure places the claim in a legally and politically ambiguous space. This is not the first time a ruling party in Madhya Pradesh has used development pledges as a campaign lever in bypolls — a pattern that opposition parties have previously flagged before the Election Commission of India (ECI).

With polling just days away, both the BJP and Congress are pulling senior leadership into Datia, signalling how much each side values the seat ahead of the broader political calendar.
