Gwalior, May 4 (NationPress) The government of Madhya Pradesh has announced plans to provide benefits equivalent to those available to industries, including land and various financial incentives, for self-sustaining Gaushalas (cowsheds) across the state.
The Chief Minister indicated that each municipal town is required to establish cowsheds capable of housing 10,000 stray, ill, or abandoned cows.
“A guaranteed purchase agreement will ensure milk procurement from these cowsheds, thereby stabilizing the dairy sector and securing income for farmers who care for the cattle. Those interested in launching large-scale Gaushalas will receive a financial assistance of 30 percent. Currently, we are covering the costs for 50 cows if someone establishes a cowshed with 200 cows,” the Chief Minister stated during a program at Rajmata Vijyaraje Scindia Agricultural University in Gwalior.
The event was organized to honor Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The Chief Minister further noted that if someone builds extensive cowsheds for 5,000 to 10,000 cows, the state government will provide 30 percent financial aid and even land free of charge, similar to what is offered to large industries.
He mentioned that the outdated system of auctioning stray cows through ‘cattle pounds’ has been abolished.
“Stray cows now have a home in these Gaushalas. The government provides a 25 percent subsidy for establishing cowsheds for 25 cows, and a subsidy for 50 cows is available if an individual sets up a cowshed of 200 cows or eight units of 25 cows each,” he explained.
The Chief Minister confirmed that this scheme now includes a clause mandating the state government to procure 100 percent of the milk produced in these cowsheds.
“We aim to increase our milk production from 9 percent to 20 percent within the next three years. The advancement of Gaushalas will herald a new era in the state’s dairy sector, boosting milk production and enhancing the income of dairy farmers,” he added.
He emphasized that providing fair prices for dairy producers is a top priority, with prompt actions being taken in this area.
The Chief Minister stated that the government is systematically tackling the issue of stray cattle by establishing “large-capacity cow shelters” in major cities, featuring the “hi-tech Kamdhenu Gaushala in Indore.”
Public involvement will be encouraged to ensure long-term sustainability, and the new policy, ‘Self-Sustaining Gaushalas–2025’, is set to enhance cattle welfare.
Currently, the state has 2,200 cowsheds with a total capacity to care for 3.45 lakh cows, offering Rs 40 per cow to these cowsheds. An allocation of Rs 505 crore has been set aside under the ‘Gau Samvardhan’ scheme in the annual budget for 2025-26.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who attended the event as the chief guest, highlighted that the foundation of a prosperous India lies in the agricultural fields.
“While we often keep our thoughts to ourselves, avoiding discussion on certain challenges, we cannot remain silent when it comes to farmers. It is our duty to find solutions that ease their burdens and improve their lives,” he remarked.
