Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday, 26 July paid solemn tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil War, declaring that the nation will forever remain indebted to the valiant men of the Indian Army who reclaimed the snow-covered heights of Kargil. His remarks came as India marked the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas with national pride and remembrance.

Rajnath Singh's Tribute

In a post on X, Singh said: 'On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my deepest respects to all the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the defence of our motherland. The nation will forever remain grateful and indebted to all those valiant soldiers who demonstrated extraordinary valour on the inaccessible peaks of Kargil in 1999.'

He added: 'The indomitable courage, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve of the Indian Army will continue to inspire future generations with patriotism, dedication to duty, and the spirit of offering everything for the motherland.'

Kargil War Memorial Ceremony at Drass

The two-day commemoration commenced on Saturday at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, where senior military commanders, veterans, families of martyrs, civil dignitaries, and government representatives gathered to honour the fallen. The memorial at Drass, located near the Line of Control, is the focal point of annual Kargil Vijay Diwas observances.

Singh travelled to Kargil by road from Srinagar, where he was received on arrival at Srinagar International Airport by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha along with senior civil and security officials.

Significance of the 27th Anniversary

Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates India's decisive victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War, when Indian armed forces, in a high-altitude operation across some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world, retook strategic peaks that had been occupied by Pakistani forces. The conflict, which lasted from May to July 1999, claimed the lives of hundreds of Indian soldiers.

Notably, this year's observance carries added weight — it marks the 25th anniversary of the victory, making it one of the most significant commemorations since the conflict ended. The annual event has grown into a national moment of remembrance, with ceremonies held across military cantonments and schools throughout the country.
