Will a New Eco-Tourism Bird-Watching Site Transform TN's Pulicat?

Chennai, July 30 (NationPress) A fresh bird-watching hotspot is slated to launch by the year's end at Thonirevu, located near the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary, providing weekend adventurers and wildlife lovers a perfect escape just a short drive from Chennai.

This site, situated in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, is being crafted into an eco-tourism center that merges sustainable development with the area's vibrant avian population and picturesque wetlands.

The Tiruvallur district administration and the Tamil Nadu Forest Department are collaboratively establishing the one-hectare site as part of a structured eco-tourism project. A comprehensive master plan has been introduced, aiming to harmonize wildlife preservation with eco-friendly tourism.

Initial amenities include a boat jetty, visitor parking, boat rides, seating areas, food stalls, restrooms, and an interpretation center. A subsequent phase will introduce lodging options and organized tours connecting other attractions around Pulicat.

“Previously, the lack of a government-approved tourism facility led to unregulated actions threatening bird habitats,” stated a senior forest official.

“Given that the area is under the forest department's jurisdiction, we can better manage activities by providing structured rides and facilities,” he added.

The official pointed out that Thonirevu lies on the Central Asian Flyway, making it a seasonal refuge for migratory birds. “Between November and February, the site attracts species like the greater flamingo, lesser flamingo, Eurasian spoonbill, river tern, bar-headed goose, painted stork, and spot-billed pelican. Even in other months, bird watchers can expect a diverse range of avian life, though in smaller numbers,” the official elaborated.

The eco-tourism model will also emphasize community involvement. Eco-Development Committees (EDCs) from surrounding villages will play active roles, with locals trained as nature guides and boat operators.

“This initiative will help generate jobs, enhance skills, and ensure revenue-sharing, thereby strengthening the socio-economic structure of the region,” remarked Tiruvallur Collector M. Prathap.

Tourism experts believe that Thonirevu could soon emerge as a pivotal point in the Tiruvallur tourism circuit.

K.M.Rajesh commented, “If a well-structured circuit is established, tourists can visit Pulicat, Gudiyam caves, Tiruttani temple, and Poondi as part of a single itinerary.”

“However, visitor numbers must be controlled to safeguard the delicate ecosystem,” he cautioned.
