Pune, May 17 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended two fugitives associated with the banned terrorist organization ISIS, who were part of a sleeper cell engaged in the assembly and testing of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Pune, Maharashtra.
The arrests are linked to a 2023 terror conspiracy case.
The suspects, Abdullah Faiyaz Shaikh alias Diaperwala, and Talha Khan, were intercepted at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2 by the Bureau of Immigration.
Both individuals had been hiding in Jakarta, Indonesia, and were taken into custody by the NIA upon their return to India.
According to the NIA, they had been evading capture for over two years and were wanted in relation to Case RC-05/2023/NIA/MUM. The NIA Special Court in Mumbai had issued non-bailable warrants against them, and a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh each was announced for information leading to their capture.
The NIA revealed that the case is part of a larger conspiracy involving ten individuals, including the two arrested, aimed at executing terrorist activities and waging war against the Government of India.
"They had plotted to execute terrorist acts with the intent to disrupt India's peace and communal harmony by waging a war against the Government of India, advancing the ISIS agenda to impose Islamic rule through violence and terror," the agency stated.
Abdullah Faiyaz Shaikh had rented a residence in Kondhwa, Pune, which served as a base for assembling IEDs.
The NIA disclosed that during 2022 and 2023, the suspects not only fabricated IEDs but also conducted training workshops in bomb-making and even executed a controlled explosion to test one of their devices.
The investigative agency, dedicated to dismantling ISIS-linked networks in India, had previously filed a chargesheet against all ten suspects under various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosive Substances Act, Arms Act, and the Indian Penal Code.
In addition to Abdullah Faiyaz Shaikh and Talha Khan, the other eight suspects currently in judicial custody include Mohammed Imran Khan, Mohammed Yunus Saki, Abdul Kadir Pathan, Simab Nasiruddin Kazi, Zulfikar Ali Barodawala, Shamil Nachan, Akif Nachan, and Shahnawaz Alam.
The NIA indicated that investigations in this case are ongoing.
