Hyderabad/Visakhapatnam, June 8 (NationPress) In a tragic turn of events, nine young lives were lost in two different drowning incidents across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, authorities reported on Sunday.
On Saturday, six youths drowned in the Medigadda barrage on the Godavari River located in Telangana’s Jayashankar Bhupalapally district. Their bodies were recovered the following day.
In Andhra Pradesh, three Class 10 students tragically drowned while swimming in a lake at the Guntaseema panchayat headquarters in Dumbriguda mandal. The victims were identified as K. Sushant, G. Bhanu Tejam, and Sai Kiran.
According to the police, the three friends ventured to the lake for a swim during their holidays.
Meanwhile, the six bodies retrieved from the Medigadda barrage included Madhusudhan (18), P. Shiva Manoj (15), Rakshit (13), Karnala Sagar (16), Ram Charan (18), and P. Rahul (19). All were taken to the Mahadevpur government hospital for autopsy.
On Saturday, eight members of an extended family from Ambatipalli and Korlakunta villages went to Medigadda for a bath following a wedding reception. They were accompanied by a middle-aged man, Patti Venkataswami.
While Venkataswami and another individual survived, the tragedy claimed the lives of two of his sons, Madhusudhan and Manoj.
IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu directed district officials to initiate extensive search and rescue operations immediately. He also instructed senior officials from the Revenue and Police Departments to oversee the situation closely.
Rescue teams, including police, fire services, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), participated in the operation, deploying expert swimmers and three boats to recover the bodies.
According to police reports, it all began when two boys started to drown, prompting their friends to attempt a rescue, which ultimately led to multiple fatalities.
Officials noted that recent rainfall in upstream areas had increased water inflows in the Godavari at Medigadda.
