The Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, addressed inquiries in the Rajya Sabha, mentioning that according to the RBI, lower-denomination notes have not traditionally been available through ATMs.

He also announced that a pilot initiative has been launched to dispense these lower denomination notes through small value dispensers.

The government revealed that in the current financial year (up to February 26), a total of 439.40 crore Rs 10 notes, 193.70 crore Rs 20 notes, and 130.30 crore Rs 50 notes have been supplied by the central bank.

In the previous fiscal year (FY25), 180 crore Rs 10 notes, 150 crore Rs 20 notes, and 300 crore Rs 50 notes were distributed.

Demand for lower denomination currency is fulfilled through a combination of banknotes and coins. Additionally, the rise of digital payment methods plays a significant role in facilitating overall transactions, including those of lower value.

The RBI has assured that it strives to maintain sufficient quantities of different denominations of banknotes and coins in circulation to meet economic demands, as mentioned by the minister.

In response to another inquiry, the minister noted that according to the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI), the total number of digital transactions conducted via RuPay KCC cards in FY 2025-26 (up to December 31, 2025) stands at 3.72 lakh, amounting to Rs 111.17 crore.
