Shimla, June 10 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, inaugurated border tourism initiatives at Shipki-La, located in Kinnaur district at an elevation of 3,930 meters near the Tibetan border.
During a public address, the Chief Minister mentioned, "At this border, we have lifted restrictions, allowing tourists to appreciate the stunning landscapes of Shipki-La. This tourism initiative is expected to boost the local economy and enhance regional tourism."
He added that the state government has approached the Ministry of Defence for permission to kickstart tourism operations in border regions including Lepcha, Shipki-La, Giu, and Rani Kanda.
Following the approval, the border tourism project has been officially launched. The Chief Minister expressed intentions to discuss the initiation of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Shipki-La with the central government.
"I plan to meet with the Prime Minister to present this proposal. Shipki-La offers the most accessible route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra," he stated.
The historic trade route between India and Tibet via Shipki-La had been closed since 2020.
"There is great potential for trade and cultural exchanges through this route, and we will advocate for its reopening with the central government," Sukhu noted.
Additionally, he mentioned that the government has requested the establishment of a Himachal Scout Battalion, which will include a special quota for local residents.
"We will also pursue the establishment of an airport to enhance tourism in border areas. The state government plans to urge the central government to eliminate the Inner Line Check Post enforced by military and paramilitary forces, which currently imposes permit-related challenges for tourists," he stated.
Furthermore, he announced that the Wangtu-Atargu-Mud-Bhaba road connecting Lahaul-Spiti district with Kinnaur has received approval from the National Wildlife Board, facilitating its construction and reducing the travel distance between Shimla and Kaza by about 100 km.
The Chief Minister emphasized that border roads hold strategic significance and aim to benefit local communities by enhancing connectivity in these remote regions.
Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, hailing from Kinnaur, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for launching border tourism activities and mentioned that more basic facilities would be developed at Shipki-La in the future. He also advocated for the introduction of an on-demand bus service in the area.
