Bhubaneswar, Nov 23 (NationPress) The Rourkela Police successfully apprehended eight members of a notorious interstate dacoity gang on Sunday, following intense gunfights at two different locations under the jurisdiction of Lahunipada and Chandiposh Police Stations. During the confrontations, three gang members, including the leader Chanda Nayak, known as Chande from Jharkhand, suffered bullet wounds.
On November 22, law enforcement received reliable intelligence regarding the movements of this hardcore dacoity gang in the Bonai region of Sundargarh district.
Following this, the Inspectors-In-Charge of all police stations and the Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) in the vicinity were directed to stay vigilant. Police personnel conducted checkpoint inspections (naka checking) across their respective areas, concentrating on major routes and inter-district as well as inter-state borders.
In the early hours of Sunday, the accused gang members, who were traveling in a four-wheeler and two motorcycles towards the Koida area, attempted to escape upon noticing a police checkpoint. This led to an armed exchange between the suspects and a combined team from K Balang and Koida Police near the Limsa area under Lahunipada Police Station.
“The suspects were warned and asked to surrender, but they ignored the police's instructions. The team responded with controlled fire, injuring one of the suspects identified as Paras Ram, while others managed to escape towards Chandiposh,” police sources stated.
In a parallel incident, other gang members clashed with a joint police team from Chandiposh and Gurundia Police Stations near Kucheita village, resulting in injuries to two suspects, identified as Chanda Nayak and Rajesh Singh, who were shot in the legs.
The injured were promptly transported to Rourkela Government Hospital for medical attention. Subsequently, law enforcement was able to apprehend five additional members of this interstate robbery gang.
Authorities confiscated one Scorpio vehicle, two motorcycles, two improvised firearms, one revolver, eight live ammunition rounds, and cash totaling Rs 76,150 from the suspects.
This gang is implicated in numerous robbery incidents in Barsuan, Banko, and two other cases within the Koida Police Station jurisdiction. Additionally, they have multiple cases filed against them in various police stations across Odisha and neighboring Jharkhand.
