Bhubaneswar, Nov 11 (NationPress) The polling for the Nuapada Assembly by-election wrapped up without incident on Tuesday, achieving a voter turnout of approximately 81.45 percent.
After the polling ended, Odisha's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R.S. Gopalan addressed the press, stating that the voting process was effectively carried out across 165 polling stations within the constituency.
He noted that voting at 47 booths concluded by 4 p.m., while the remaining booths remained open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
"All polling activities were carried out smoothly. We are monitoring the situation closely, and no significant incidents or disruptions have been reported," CEO Gopalan remarked.
He mentioned that eight polling stations located in remote and forested areas were accessed by helicopter, with all personnel returning safely after their duties.
A minor technical difficulty was encountered at Booth number 246, where an EVM (one ballot unit, one control unit, and one VVPAT) was swapped out after 5 p.m.
This issue was swiftly resolved, allowing polling to continue without further interruptions.
The CEO also addressed allegations concerning dysfunctional EVMs at another location.
"A complaint was filed claiming that votes were recorded for a specific candidate regardless of the button pressed. Our investigation deemed this claim unfounded. Voters were given the opportunity for a test vote under Section 49M, but no one opted for it. Polling agents from all recognized parties verified that the machines operated correctly," he stated.
CEO Gopalan added that there were no significant law enforcement issues or security breaches during the polling.
Robust police presence ensured the election proceeded smoothly and securely.
"All EVMs will be secured and stored in a strongroom tonight, under the supervision of observers and candidate representatives. The sealing process will be finalized once all machines are accounted for, likely by late tonight or early tomorrow morning," he informed.
The final voter turnout statistics are anticipated to be published by late Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning after all polling data is compiled.
