Bengaluru, Nov 14 (NationPress) The esteemed environmentalist and Padma Shri recipient, 'Saalumarada' Thimmakka, has sadly passed away at the remarkable age of 114 on Friday. She was receiving treatment for respiratory issues at a private hospital located in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, where she breathed her last at noon after her health deteriorated.

Born on June 30, 1911, in Gubbi taluk of Tumakuru district, Thimmakka was united in marriage with Chikkayya in Hulikal village. The couple remained childless, which inspired her to plant and nurture banyan saplings along the roadsides, tending to them as if they were her own children. This led to her being affectionately known as Saalumarada (meaning 'row of trees') Thimmakka.

Despite her illiteracy, she emerged as a global icon for environmental conservation.

Throughout her life, she earned numerous accolades, including the Rajyotsava Award, Vishalakshi Award, Nadoja Award (2010), and the distinguished Padma Shri (2019).

In 2020, she was honored with an honorary doctorate from the Central University of Karnataka.

Political leaders, environmental advocates, and public figures from across India have expressed profound sorrow at her passing.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his grief, stating, "I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of 'Vrikshamate' Saalumarada Thimmakka. She dedicated her life to environmental conservation, having planted thousands of trees and cared for them as if they were her own children. Although she has left us, her love for nature will make her immortal. I pay my respects to this great soul who has departed."

He further remarked, "With her passing, our nation has lost a remarkable figure. I pray for her soul to attain eternal peace and extend my condolences to her family."

The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, R. Ashoka, expressed his sorrow, saying, "I am saddened by the news of Vrkshamate Dr. Salumara Thimmakka's passing, our esteemed Padma Shri awardee, who lovingly planted banyan saplings and famously stated, 'Trees are my children.' May her soul rest in eternal peace. Let us honor her legacy by following in her footsteps of environmental stewardship and nurturing our surroundings."

BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra shared his condolences, acknowledging that born in Gubbi Taluk of Tumakuru district, she became widely recognized as Vrkshamate (Mother of Trees). Her love for trees and plants was akin to that of a mother for her children. Thimmakka received several honors, including the National Citizens’ Award, Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Award, and the Padma Shri Award, along with the Rajyotsava Award and Nadoja Award.
