New Delhi, May 15 (NationPress) - Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in discussions with leading representatives from the electronics sector to improve the safety of electrical appliances for consumers.
“I had an enlightening conversation with significant stakeholders from the electronics sector focusing on the execution of horizontal Quality Control Orders (QCOs) aimed at boosting the safety of electrical appliances for consumer protection,” stated the Minister.
“Additionally, we investigated avenues for fostering industry growth and enhancing global competitiveness,” he noted in a post on the social media platform X.
Horizontal Quality Control Orders (QCOs) are government mandates that require Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for designated products. These regulations are designed to guarantee quality and safety by limiting substandard imports while encouraging domestic manufacturing.
Products subject to a QCO must display the BIS Standard Mark to be manufactured, sold, traded, imported, or stored. The objectives of QCOs include safeguarding consumers, promoting fair trade practices, and supporting local industries by limiting inferior imports and ensuring quality benchmarks.
The BIS serves as the enforcement and certification authority for products governed by QCOs.
Up to now, a total of 187 Quality Control Orders have been issued, covering 769 products that require mandatory BIS certification from various governmental regulators and ministries in India.
The Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2024 was released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
This QCO encompasses all electrical appliances intended for household, commercial, or similar uses with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V single-phase alternating current or 415V three-phase alternating current, provided they do not fall under the jurisdiction of any other Quality Control Order issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act.
The introduction of products under the mandatory quality control order and the execution of the QCO is contingent upon the needs of various Ministries/Departments, as the necessity arises.
These Ministries/Departments, in collaboration with BIS, publish QCOs under the authority granted by the BIS Act, 2016, thereby ensuring that products adhere to BIS Mandatory Certification.
