New Delhi, April 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday conveyed warm wishes to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and members during the celebration of the party's Sthapana Diwas and expressed his appreciation for those who have devoted years to enhancing and fortifying the party.
The BJP was officially founded on April 6, 1980, at a workers' convention held at Kotla Ground in New Delhi, where Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected as its inaugural president.
In a message on X, PM Modi stated, "Warm greetings to all BJP Karyakartas on the occasion of the party's Sthapana Diwas. We honor all individuals who have dedicated themselves to the fortification of our party over the many years. This pivotal day serves to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to advance India's development and fulfill the aspiration of a Viksit Bharat."
Reinforcing the government's pledge toward national advancement, he added, "The citizens of India are witnessing the good governance initiatives of our party, as evidenced by the historic support we've garnered in past elections, including the Lok Sabha elections, Assembly elections in various states, and numerous local body elections throughout the country."
Emphasizing the party's dedication to inclusive development, the Prime Minister remarked, "Our governments will persist in serving society and ensuring comprehensive development."
He recognized the vital contribution of party workers in disseminating the message of good governance at the grassroots level.
"My best wishes to all our dedicated Karyakartas, the foundation of our party, as they diligently engage on the ground and articulate our good governance agenda. I take pride in the way our Karyakartas tirelessly work across the nation, assisting the poor, underprivileged, and marginalized. Their vigor and enthusiasm are genuinely inspiring," stated the Prime Minister.
The party's origins trace back to the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded by Syama Prasad Mukherjee in 1951. The Jana Sangh was initiated as a response to the dominance of the Indian National Congress and in collaboration with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Perceived widely as the political wing of the RSS, the Jana Sangh laid the ideological and organizational groundwork upon which the BJP was ultimately established.
Though formally inaugurated in 1980, the BJP's ideological roots run deep into the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. The party's official website notes that the post-independence period saw rising unease among nationalist citizens, particularly following the passing of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
With what the party describes as "Nehru's authoritarianism" gaining traction within the Congress, concerns emerged regarding policies such as minority appeasement, the license-permit-quota system, national security challenges, and perceived weaknesses regarding Kashmir and other international issues.
"Frustrated by 'Nehruism' and India's inaction regarding the atrocities faced by Hindu minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stepped down from the Nehru cabinet," states the BJP website.
It further elaborates, "Consequently, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh was founded on October 21, 1951, at Delhi's Raghomal Arya Kanya Kanya High School under the chairmanship of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee."
