Colombo, April 5 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake celebrated the launch of the groundbreaking ceremony for the 120 MW Sampur Solar power project, a collaborative venture between the two countries. This initiative, located in the northeastern district of Trincomalee, aims to facilitate Sri Lanka's shift towards clean energy, lower electricity costs for consumers, generate additional employment opportunities, and boost economic growth.

Additionally, PM Modi inaugurated the provision of solar rooftop systems to 500 religious institutions in Sri Lanka, which are expected to produce 25 MW of electricity and bolster the energy security of various establishments.

Regarding this development, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, remarked that PM Modi’s visit is igniting a clean energy revolution in Sri Lanka. He highlighted the significance of the 120 MW Sampur solar project and the rooftop solar systems for 500 religious institutions, emphasizing the benefits for energy security, cost reduction, job creation, and economic progress on his social media account.

Moreover, PM Modi engaged in high-level discussions with President Dissanayake and oversaw the signing of seven MoUs across vital sectors like defense, energy, digital infrastructure, health, and trade.

One of the MoUs formalized the implementation of HVDC Interconnection to facilitate the import and export of power between India and Sri Lanka.

Another agreement between India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Digital Economy focuses on cooperation in sharing successful digital solutions for comprehensive digital transformation.

During this visit, PM Modi also unveiled a robust capacity-building program in India for 700 Sri Lankans each year; announced India's grant assistance for the development of the Thirukoneswaram temple in Trincomalee, the Sita Eliya temple in Nuwara Eliya, and the Sacred City Complex project in Anuradhapura; the exhibition of Lord Buddha relics in Sri Lanka on International Vesak Day 2025; and the finalization of bilateral agreements on debt restructuring.
