New Delhi, May 21 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday honored former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of his 34th death anniversary.
Rajiv Gandhi, who held the position of India's Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989, took office after the tragic assassination of his mother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became the youngest Prime Minister in Indian history at the age of 40.
In a post on X, PM Modi expressed, "On his death anniversary today, I pay my tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji."
Rajiv Gandhi led the nation until the 1989 general elections, after which he assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He resigned in December 1990, just six months prior to his own assassination in a horrific terrorist attack.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to X to pay respects to the former Prime Minister.

The remarkable contributions made by Rajiv Gandhi in the national interest will always be remembered."
Mallikarjun Kharge also honored the former leader through a post on X, referring to Rajiv Gandhi as "a great son of India" who inspired hope among millions.

Kharge emphasized several of Rajiv Gandhi's significant contributions, noting, "These include lowering the voting age to 18, fortifying Panchayati Raj, leading the Telecom and IT revolution, implementing a computerization initiative, securing lasting peace accords, launching a universal immunization program, and introducing a new education policy aimed at inclusive learning."
