New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday established a significant target of ₹9 lakh crore for India’s annual textiles and apparel exports by 2030. This ambitious goal indicates a three-fold increase from the current ₹3 lakh crore, emphasizing the substantial job creation occurring in a sector that employs millions of workers.
While speaking at the Bharat Tex 2025 expo, the Prime Minister urged the textiles industry to enhance the export growth rate from the present 7 percent to 17 percent to meet this target.
He mentioned that the banking sector would prioritize loans for the labour-centric textiles industry. His discussions with exhibitors at Bharat Tex highlighted a significant demand for Indian products in the global market, which has hindered their ability to scale production.
PM Modi noted that this demand for Indian goods is reflected in the participation of over 6,000 buyers from 126 countries at Bharat Tex 2025, now recognized as the largest fair in the textiles sector.
He pointed out the success of the Bharat Tex expo, which provides a platform for Indian entrepreneurs to transition from local to global, facilitating interactions with buyers from over 120 countries.
He also emphasized the government’s long-term vision for the textiles industry, demonstrated by new incentives introduced in the 2025-26 Budget. The textiles sector, known for generating the highest number of jobs in the country, plays a pivotal role in achieving Viksit Bharat, PM Modi stated.
With more than 80 percent of firms in textiles and apparel being MSMEs, they will benefit from enhanced credit access and relaxed regulations. Additionally, the MSME sector is eligible for various skill development incentives, which will also extend to the textiles industry.
PM Modi highlighted the Mission for Cotton Productivity announced in the Budget proposals, aimed at ensuring a consistent supply of cotton and strengthening the textiles sector’s value chain to compete globally.
He encouraged the textile sector to collaborate with IITs to leverage advanced technology for growth, including using AI to predict trends in fashion and textiles.
“Earlier we wore what the world dictated, but now we will set trends for the world,” PM Modi stated.
Furthermore, he noted that the government is not only focusing on technology and high-tech products but also on promoting India’s handloom products, which reflect the nation’s culture and possess substantial potential in foreign markets. Over the past decade, more than 2,400 events have been organized to promote handloom products, and online marketing efforts have intensified to provide e-commerce platforms for these goods. Additionally, GI tagging has significantly boosted the sales of these items.
PM Modi also stressed the importance of recycling and upcycling waste in the textiles industry to safeguard the environment and combat climate change.
He noted that, according to estimates, the fashion industry generates 140 million tonnes of waste globally, with less than 25 percent being recycled. India has the potential to lead in this area, with an estimated opportunity of $400 million.
The Prime Minister toured various stalls at the Bharat Tex expo and engaged with participants to gain insights into the exhibition. Over 5,000 exhibitors are showcasing their products, with attendance from 6,000 international buyers.
Bharat Tex is the largest and most comprehensive event in the textile industry, featuring a mega expo across two venues and displaying the entire textile ecosystem. Countries such as Japan, UAE, Iran, USA, Spain, and the UK are participating in Bharat Tex 2025, a global event running from February 14-17 at Bharat Mandapam.
Additionally, over 25 leading global textile organizations and associations, including the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF), International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), EURATEX, Textile Exchange, and US Fashion Industry Association (USFIA), are partaking in this event.
