Bhubaneswar, May 6 (NationPress) Sudarsan Pattnaik, a renowned sand artist and recipient of the Padma Shri award, has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the controversial Digha temple issue. He expressed concerns that the West Bengal government's designation of the newly built temple as 'Jagannath Dham' has sparked significant confusion and has deeply offended the sentiments of numerous devotees of Lord Jagannath.
In his communication to PM Modi, Pattnaik stated, "While the creation of a new temple dedicated to Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannath is commendable and commendable, the title 'Jagannath Dham' has caused distress among millions of devotees."
Pattnaik emphasized the importance of tradition, noting, "According to our sacred texts (Shastras), there is only one officially recognized Jagannath Dham, which is located in Puri, Odisha. Misappropriating this revered title for any other site could lead to religious confusion and contradict the rich spiritual traditions and cultural legacy of Hinduism."
He acknowledged PM Modi's "steadfast" commitment to Mahaprabhu Jagannath and his dedicated efforts to preserve the esteemed Jagannath culture, urging him to take necessary measures.
Beneath the shadows of this debate, Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibya Singha Deb, the "Adya-sevak" or First Servitor of Lord Jagannatha, stated that according to texts such as the 'Skanda Purana', 'Brahma Purana', and 'Padma Purana', only Puri can be rightfully called 'Shree Jagannatha Dham', as it stands as the eternal Holy Abode of the Supreme Lord, Shree Purushottama-Jagannatha.
Deb has advised the Digha Jagannath Temple authorities to refrain from using the title 'Jagannath Dham' and to respect the long-standing traditions and heritage of the Moola-peetha Shreemandira situated in Puri.
In a similar vein, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced that the state government will soon contact West Bengal, urging them to stop referring to the Digha Jagannath Temple as 'Jagannath Dham' and the Digha beach as 'Mahadodhi'.
Furthermore, Minister Harichandan indicated that the Odisha government is contemplating legal action should West Bengal continue to disregard this matter.
