New Delhi, Dec 8 (NationPress) The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has successfully recorded 23,96,497 rooftop solar system installations in households, which represents approximately 23.96% of its ambitious target, as reported in Parliament on Monday.
The initiative is designed to equip one crore households in the residential sector with rooftop solar systems by the fiscal year 2026-27.
This demand-driven program allows all residential consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection from their local DISCOM to access its benefits by applying via the National Portal.
“The initiative is advancing effectively, with 53,54,099 applications received on the National Portal and 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems installed, impacting 23,96,497 households as of 03.12.2025,” stated Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
The scheme aims to cover 35 lakh households in FY 2025-26, with the government implementing various measures to expedite its execution nationwide.
These include a fully online process from registration to subsidy disbursal directly into the bank accounts of residential consumers, availability of collateral-free loans from nationalized banks at a concessional interest rate of repo-rate plus 50 bps – 6% per annum currently, with a tenure of 10 years; along with simplified regulatory approval processes by eliminating the technical feasibility requirement and introducing auto load enhancements up to 10 kW.
The minister highlighted that a net metering agreement is now part of the application process on the National Portal, and the vendor registration process has been streamlined to ensure an adequate supply of qualified vendors.
Launched on February 13, 2024, this initiative, which has a total budget of Rs 75,021 crore, aims to install rooftop solar systems for one crore households, providing each with up to 300 units of free electricity every month.
