New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) The government has granted approval for the construction of more than 3.53 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) initiative, as announced on Friday.
A total of 3,52,915 houses have been approved under the beneficiary-led construction (BLC) and affordable housing in partnership (AHP) components of PMAY-U 2.0 across 10 states/UTs: Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh. This was sanctioned during the meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), as reported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The scheme is aimed at empowering women, with over 2.67 lakh houses sanctioned for females, including single women and widows, alongside 90 houses allocated for transgender individuals.
Among the total sanctioned houses, 80,850 houses are designated for SC beneficiaries, 15,928 for ST, and 2,12,603 for OBC category, fostering inclusiveness and equality among various underprivileged groups.
Additionally, Uttar Pradesh is providing Rs 30,000 to each senior citizen beneficiary (over 70 years old) and Rs 20,000 for each unmarried woman (over 40 years of age), widow, and separated female beneficiary, supplementing the state share under PMAY-U 2.0.
The Ministry has initiated PMAY-U 2.0 under the ‘Housing for All’ Mission starting from September 1, 2024, targeting implementation in urban areas for 1 crore additional eligible beneficiaries.
According to the ministry, PMAY-U 2.0 aims to meet the housing demands of 1 crore urban poor and middle-class families within five years, ensuring improved quality of life for all citizens.
PMAY-U 2.0 is being executed through four verticals: Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), and Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS). Eligible beneficiaries can take advantage of benefits under any one vertical according to their qualifications and preferences. The government will provide assistance of Rs 2.30 lakh crore under the Scheme with a total investment of Rs 10 lakh crore.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban was first launched in June 2015. To date, 118.64 lakh houses have been sanctioned, and approximately 92 lakh houses have already been constructed and handed over to beneficiaries.
