New Delhi, Oct 23 (NationPress) A political uproar erupted on Wednesday when Congress national spokesperson Shama Mohamed accused Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir of religious bias after Sarfaraz Khan was excluded from the India 'A' squad for the upcoming series against South Africa 'A'.
In a post on X, Shama questioned, "Is Sarfaraz Khan not selected due to his surname? Just asking. We know where Gautam Gambhir stands on this issue," which sparked intense political and social media reactions.
The controversy arose following the announcement of the 15-member India 'A' team for two first-class matches against South Africa 'A' by the BCCI selection committee.
Sarfaraz, who has shown remarkable form in domestic cricket, was left out of the squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that his exclusion was due to an injury concern.
However, Shama shifted the blame to head coach Gautam Gambhir, accusing him of bias, a claim that ignited strong responses from all political fronts.
Sanjay Nirupam, a spokesperson for Shiv Sena, condemned Shama's remarks as "anti-national" and an attempt to instigate communalism.
"This is a trivial controversy. Our cricket team does not discriminate based on Hindu or Muslim identity. If that were true, Mohammad Azharuddin would never have captained our team. There has never been any discrimination in cricket. Those trying to inject Hindu-Muslim politics into it are anti-nationals," he told IANS.
Dinesh Sharma, a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, also criticized the Congress party over Shama's statement, asserting, "These individuals simply crave attention. The Congress party's double standards undermine the unity of our nation. Examples like Azharuddin, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and Yusuf Pathan prove that only players in good form are selected, which ensures our victories."
Conversely, leaders from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) expressed their support for Shama, stating that the government's track record raises valid suspicions.
SP leader S.T. Hassan remarked, "The selection process in sports suggests that this might be true. The current government's track record makes it plausible that members of the Muslim community don't receive fair opportunities. Nothing is just in this country now. While I can't confirm it, it could hold some truth."
AIMIM leader Waris Pathan questioned the selection criteria, stating, "A young talent making waves in cricket—why stop him? Initially, they claimed he was unfit, yet Sarfaraz has improved his fitness. His performance stats are solid. So why was he overlooked?"
"Isn't it reasonable for the public to inquire whether he was disregarded because of his name? What has Jay Shah achieved other than being the Home Minister's son?" he posed.
Meanwhile, the Congress party distanced itself from Shama's comments.
Senior party leader Udit Raj told IANS, "While I don't closely follow cricket, I've observed that many Muslim players like Mohammad Azharuddin have been part of the Indian team. Discrimination in cricket is not something I've witnessed, unlike in other realms."
