Agartala, Sep 22 (NationPress) The ruling BJP ally, Tipra Motha Party (TMP), along with the opposition Congress and CPI (M), expressed strong disapproval of the BJP government for excluding them from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event in Tripura.
In a significant move that met public anticipation, PM Modi inaugurated the revitalized Mata Tripura Sundari temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas honored by Hindus, located in Udaipur, southern Tripura. This redevelopment was carried out under the PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) initiative of the Union Tourism Ministry, costing over Rs 54 crore.
On Monday, TMP officials and MLAs voiced their concerns regarding the lack of invitations to the Prime Minister’s event. Senior TMP member and legislator Ranjit Debbarma stated that neither party leaders nor MLAs, including party head Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, a former royal descendant, were invited.
He emphasized that the 524-year-old Tripura Sundari temple, constructed in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, did not have any representatives from the royal family present at this historic occasion.
“The Tripura Sundari temple holds deep ties to tribal culture and traditions, yet no tribal leader was acknowledged at the Prime Minister’s gathering,” Debbarma remarked, labeling the situation as a “black day for the state.”
The tribal leader warned that such negligence would disrupt harmony between tribal and non-tribal communities in Tripura. He pointed out that prior to the signing of the Tripura Merger Agreement on October 15, 1949, the temple was under the stewardship of the Manikya dynasty.
Following extensive discussions and a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government on March 2 last year, the opposition TMP, comprising 13 MLAs, allied with the BJP-led government on March 7, adding a new dynamic to Tripura's political landscape. Two TMP MLAs, Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma, joined Chief Minister Manik Saha's ministry.
Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury, also the CPI (M) Tripura state secretary, along with Congress working committee member Sudip Roy Barman, condemned the BJP government for their exclusion from the Prime Minister’s event.
Chaudhury, a former minister and ex-MP, criticized the BJP for lacking democratic values and focusing solely on party interests.
Roy Barman took to Facebook to express that Modi, as the Prime Minister, should have transcended political affiliations. “His visit to inaugurate the newly redeveloped architecture of the Mata Tripura Sundari temple should have seen the inclusion of all political leaders,” he stated, highlighting the discourteousness displayed by the ruling party and government towards opposition members.
He remarked, “A political party that can exploit even the occasion of Goddess Mata Tripura Sundari has unveiled its true character to the public. I strongly denounce the ruling party and government for their mean-spirited behavior.”
Accompanying the Prime Minister during his visit to the temple were Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, BJP state President Rajib Bhattacharjee, and other prominent leaders and officials.
