New Delhi, July 19 (NationPress) Emphasizing the necessity of environmental conservation, Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai remarked on Saturday that safeguarding the environment of Delhi is a shared duty.
Speaking at a tree-planting event organized by the Delhi government, the CJI stated, "While development is essential, we must comprehend the price it entails."
"Every year, concerns arise as October approaches... The forests, which are integral to humanity's heritage, are not solely ours; they are the legacy for future generations as well. They are crucial in alleviating the pollution that plagues Delhi," he added.
CJI Gavai reiterated the Supreme Court's consistent emphasis on the significance of sustainable development and its issuance of pivotal guidelines for pollution management.
Previously, the CJI, accompanied by 20 Supreme Court judges, participated in a large-scale tree-planting initiative organized by the Delhi government as part of Van Mahotsav 2025 at Delhi Ridge.
The judges were joined by Delhi's Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
Minister Sirsa remarked that the participation of the CJI and other judges under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign strengthens the message that we must unite to restore Delhi's green cover and reclaim clean air.
He shared that it was an emotional experience for both the judges and Delhi government officials as they planted saplings in honor of their mothers.
"The area where the CJI and the judges planted the saplings will be turned into Nyay Vatika," Sirsa informed IANS.
Sirsa also viewed the participation of the CJI, along with his spouse, in Van Mahotsav 2025 as a significant milestone in the city's battle against pollution.
"The CJI's involvement demonstrates his dedication to every single tree," he added.
On the previous day, embracing the ethos of 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta planted saplings.
She encouraged Delhi residents to engage in the movement by planting more trees in their homes, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and community areas.
