"Elderly individuals are not only a connection to our past but also serve as mentors for the future. It is our collective duty as a nation to ensure that our seniors experience a fulfilling and dignified old age," the President stated.
She voiced her concerns regarding reports of mistreatment of the elderly by their own children.
"Respecting our parents and elders is ingrained in our culture," she added, urging younger generations to care for them.
The President highlighted the role of elders as emotional anchors for families, providing support, inspiration, and guidance amid today’s fast-paced and competitive environment.
"Their vast experiences and wisdom can equip the younger generation to tackle complex challenges," she noted.
She applauded government initiatives aimed at empowering senior citizens, such as the expansion of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance program, which enables them to actively engage in all areas of life.
"Every citizen must dedicate themselves to the happiness and well-being of the elderly, treasure their guidance, and cherish their company," Murmu stated.
During the event organized by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the President also inaugurated the senior citizens welfare portal.
"This portal will serve as a One-Stop Digital Platform for our seniors," President Murmu explained.
The event also included the virtual launch of senior citizens' homes, the distribution of assistive devices, and an MoU signing between the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Brahmakumaris organization.
