Puducherry, July 24 (NationPress) - On Thursday, the Union Government revealed a detailed master plan aimed at the expansion of Puducherry airport. This initiative includes enhancements to accommodate larger aircraft and the possible addition of new flight routes, contingent upon commercial feasibility.
In response to a query from Puducherry MP and Pradesh Congress Committee president V. Vaithilingam, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu stated that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has developed a proposal for upgrading the airport’s facilities.
The enhancement plan involves extending the runway to a length of 2,300 metres and a width of 45 metres, which will facilitate the operation of Airbus A320 aircraft, commonly utilized in domestic aviation.
To support this expansion effort, an estimated total of 402 acres of land will be required—comprising 217 acres in Tamil Nadu and 185 acres within the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The proposal has been forwarded to the Puducherry government for subsequent actions, the Union Minister confirmed.
At present, the airport offers limited service with flights exclusively to Bangalore and Hyderabad. MP Vaithilingam specifically requested information on whether new routes to Kochi and Shirdi were being considered.
In reply, Union Minister Naidu emphasized that the Indian aviation sector is deregulated, following the abolition of the Air Corporation Act in 1994.
This means airlines have complete freedom to determine their destinations and routes based on commercial and operational factors.
"The Ministry of Civil Aviation does not control routes or destinations. Airlines are free to launch services to any city, including Kochi and Shirdi, if deemed viable. The government solely provides the necessary infrastructure and regulatory support," he stated.
The Puducherry Airport has long been constrained by the limited length of its runway and land limitations, which have restricted operations to smaller aircraft. The anticipated expansion is poised to be transformative for the region, enhancing connectivity, promoting tourism, and stimulating economic growth in and around Puducherry.
Officials from both Puducherry and Tamil Nadu are expected to collaborate closely with the Centre to address land acquisition and logistical challenges as the project advances.
