Mumbai, July 3 (NationPress) The Pune Grand Challenge Tour, an esteemed international cycling event, will be collaboratively held by the Pune District Administration and the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), with backing from the state government.
This initiative is a significant step towards positioning Pune as a prominent tourist hotspot and a global center for sports.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his optimism that in the coming three to four years, this event will gain worldwide recognition.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalized in the presence of Chief Minister Fadnavis, involving the Pune District Collector and the CFI, to host the Pune Grand Challenge Tour 2026.
Attendees included Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Higher Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, Sports Minister Dattatray Bharne, Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar, CFI President Pankaj Singh, Secretary General Mahendra Pal Singh, among other dignitaries.
Fadnavis highlighted that Pune, celebrated for its rich legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, culture, and natural beauty, alongside its identity as a tech and manufacturing hub, will unlock significant opportunities in the sports domain through this event.
Additionally, this competition is expected to attract a surge in tourists to the state, revitalizing the tourism sector.
He remarked that this event will elevate Pune’s status as a premier tourist destination on both national and international stages. It is a matter of immense pride that Pune will be included in the global sports calendar. With cycling enthusiasts in over 200 countries, this competition is set to showcase Pune’s scenic beauty, culture, and traditions on a worldwide platform, thereby drawing investments into tourism and related industries.
The Chief Minister stressed that the event will also foster sustainable development, connectivity, fitness, and environmental consciousness in rural Pune, motivating citizens to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar described this as a concerted effort to establish Pune as a “Cycling City.” Pune has already made notable contributions to the global cycling landscape.
Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi provided comprehensive details about the event. Recognized by CFI, the event is pending acknowledgment from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), Switzerland.
Once UCI recognition is obtained, this event could serve as a qualifying competition for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
