Chandigarh, May 8 (NationPress) Emphasizing that the state is engaged in dual struggles—one against Pakistan to defend its borders and another against the Union and Haryana governments to uphold its water rights—Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared on Thursday that they have successfully thwarted the malicious intentions of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to appropriate the state's waters.
Chief Minister Mann organized a sit-in at Nangal to ensure that the BBMB Chairman does not redirect the state's water supply to Haryana.
He remarked, “If the people of Punjab can secure the state's borders, they are equally capable of protecting its water resources. It is disgraceful that the BJP-led Union government is engaging in underhanded tactics regarding the state's water during a crisis when the nation should be united against our adversaries.”
On Thursday, CM Mann stated, “While sirens are sounding across the country as part of a strategy against Pakistan, the BJP is indulging in trivial politics concerning Punjab.”
He noted that the BJP and its allies are rushing to seize Punjab's waters, even though Haryana utilizes 4,000 cusecs throughout the year.
CM Mann announced that the Punjab government will contest the High Court's ruling on the BBMB and water allocation in the Supreme Court, indicating that the struggle to safeguard the state's water will be waged both politically and legally.
He condemned the BBMB Chairman for attempting to “illegally seize the state's water,” calling such actions utterly unacceptable.
CM Mann asserted that any such attempt will be met with fierce opposition from the state government.
The Chief Minister explained that the BBMB was initially formed to oversee the management of the Sutlej and Beas rivers. However, he claimed that over the years, Punjab's water has been redirected to other states through the BBMB, with the BJP government exploiting this board for political gain.
In response to the BBMB developments, Opposition Leader and Congress politician Partap Singh Bajwa criticized Chief Minister Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for resorting to theatrics instead of addressing crucial issues related to national security and state welfare.
“The recent events at the BBMB exemplify this misplaced focus. AAP Minister Harjot Bains staged a dramatic scene, claiming he confined BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi to prevent unauthorized water release to Haryana.
However, the Chairman clarified that he was not confined and was merely assessing security measures at the Nangal Dam. Such conflicting narratives and staged dramas only serve to create confusion and dilute the seriousness of the ongoing BBMB conflict,” Bajwa stated to the press.
“The BBMB requires responsible and mature action, not political theatrics. CM Mann wasted valuable time by not approaching the Supreme Court after the High Court ruled in favor of the BBMB and against Punjab's interests.
“His Cabinet should advise him to prioritize governance instead of engaging in theatrics. Punjab faces significant challenges, including water management, border security, and public welfare, necessitating focused governance rather than staged performances,” he concluded.
