Chandigarh, March 6 (NationPress) In a bid to further establish Mohali as a secure and crime-free city, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurated Phase-I of the city’s surveillance and traffic management system on Thursday, with an investment of Rs 21.60 crore.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this initiative marks a crucial advancement in urban surveillance and traffic management. The cutting-edge system is designed to enhance public safety, reduce traffic violations, and facilitate effective law enforcement through sophisticated AI-based surveillance and traffic monitoring technologies.
With a total investment of Rs 21.60 crore, the system features an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) located in Sector 79, Mohali, and integrates 351 high-resolution CCTV cameras at 17 key junctions throughout the city.
The Chief Minister highlighted that this system is aimed at optimizing traffic management, boosting public security, and aiding law enforcement. It consists of 175 automatic number plate recognition cameras, 50 cameras for detecting red light violations, 92 bullet cameras for general surveillance, and 18 pan, tilt, and zoom cameras for improved monitoring. Additionally, speed violation detection systems are installed at two crucial locations with 16 cameras.
Mann pointed out that a standout feature of this initiative is the automated e-challan system, which is seamlessly integrated with NIC's AHAN and SARATHI databases. This integration facilitates the automatic issuance of e-challans for infractions such as red-light violations, speeding, triple riding, driving on the wrong side, riding without a helmet, and violations at stop lines and zebra crossings. The system generates between 5,000 and 6,000 challans daily, significantly enhancing traffic enforcement and compliance.
Following the successful implementation of Phase I, the government is preparing for Phase II of the project, which will extend to additional locations within the district, thereby significantly expanding the city’s surveillance network. The Chief Minister stated that critical locations will receive advanced CCTV surveillance, and major traffic junctions will incorporate AI-driven adaptive traffic control systems and vehicle-actuated controls.
