Chandigarh, Oct 31 (NationPress) In a groundbreaking effort to safeguard and enhance the region's aquatic biodiversity, Punjab's Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, announced on Friday the designation of Rohu (Labeo Rohita) as the official state fish.

Emphasizing the state's abundant aquatic resources, Khudian noted that Punjab's fisheries sector is flourishing, with an impressive 43,683 acres allocated for fish farming, generating 200,000 metric tonnes of fish each year.

The Rohu fish plays a vital role, contributing 42,353 metric tonnes (21.18% of total output) and commanding a price of Rs 160-200 per kg.

This esteemed fish can attain weights of up to 45 kg in natural environments, characterized by its streamlined body and sizable cycloid scales.

Khudian further praised the Rohu for its nutritional benefits, highlighting its richness in proteins, vitamins A, B, and D, along with Omega-3 fatty acids, making it a highly sought-after delicacy not just in Punjab but in various other regions.

The Minister extended congratulations to the Fisheries Department and stakeholders for this significant recognition, acknowledging their contributions to the sector's advancement, while also stressing the importance of Indian Major Carps (IMCs) – Rohu, Catla, and Mrigal.
