Chandigarh, Jan 5 (NationPress) The Punjab government, led by the AAP, is facing intense criticism from opposition factions due to the alarming decline in law and order after the tragic murder of a sarpanch affiliated with the ruling party at a wedding in Amritsar.

Jarnail Singh, who arrived to celebrate a family event at the Marigold Resort, was fatally shot in the head by unidentified gunmen on Sunday.

He was immediately transported to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his wounds during treatment. Authorities stated that an investigation is currently underway.

This violent incident has heightened worries as the state has experienced two significant murders in just four days.

On Saturday, a Congress worker, also associated with Nestle, was shot dead in Moga district, reportedly by the sarpanch from the same village, who is part of the AAP. This was followed by the murder of another AAP sarpanch, amidst reports of ongoing threats from criminals.

In response, BJP leader Fateh Jang Singh Bajwa asserted that the Punjab government has virtually ceased to function.

"If you observe the news, the first report each morning is about a leader from some village being murdered. Just yesterday, we witnessed yet another incident. As previously mentioned, a gangster shot a liquor or betting operator in front of numerous witnesses and fled the scene. Then, in Moga, a Congress supporter was shot 20 times and killed. And now, tragically, one of the AAP sarpanches has been murdered," Bajwa expressed to IANS.

Critically assessing the state leadership, he continued, "The Punjab Chief Minister only knows how to speak. AAP convenor Kejriwal claimed that the AAP administration would eliminate crime in Punjab within 24 hours, but instead, multiple murders have occurred within that very timeframe."

Further condemning the government, Bajwa stated, "The electorate made a significant error by choosing a government incapable of managing the state."

Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also condemned the AAP administration, asserting that the law and order situation has completely disintegrated.

"There is no semblance of law and order remaining. This is not an isolated incident. Today marks the second occurrence in Amritsar where individuals had to find refuge under tables to protect themselves," he remarked.

Referring to footage of the incident, Warring added, "I’ve viewed the video -- the individual was sitting there, dining, and without any forewarning, was shot directly in the head, while the assailants walked away unfazed. What can the police do now? After the murder?"

Speaking to IANS, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh stated that conditions in Punjab have severely deteriorated.

"The law and order scenario in Punjab has worsened to the point where criminals used to conceal their identities, but now they operate openly," he noted.

"They invade a wedding venue, open fire in broad daylight, transforming a celebratory atmosphere into one of mourning, and simply walk away. The criminals feel no fear in Punjab, while ordinary citizens are the ones living in fear," Chugh added.

JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad also criticized the AAP government, stating, "Many were drawn in by grand promises, which led to your government being formed. The Chief Minister's advertisements are prominently displayed in newspapers and media, but the reality on the ground is starkly different."

"Whether regarding law and order or developmental issues, the AAP government has demonstrated failure on both fronts in Punjab. Should elections occur in the future, the AAP's chances of returning to power appear exceedingly slim," he concluded.

Meanwhile, police officials indicated that the case is being examined from all possible angles and pledged that the perpetrators would be apprehended soon. They also disclosed that Jarnail Singh had survived three previous assassination attempts.

Point of View

It’s clear that the law and order situation is increasingly alarming. The recent events underline the urgent need for effective governance and accountability. The safety of citizens must remain paramount, and it’s essential for the government to address these issues transparently and decisively, ensuring that such tragedies do not recur.
