New Delhi, July 3 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, sharply criticized the BJP-led Maharashtra government on Thursday concerning the distressing issue of farmer suicides, accusing the central government of being indifferent to their suffering. In response, the BJP promptly presented statistics regarding farmer fatalities during the tenure of the Congress-NCP coalition to clarify the situation.

The political finger-pointing regarding farmer suicides intensified following the Fadnavis government’s acknowledgment of 767 suicides occurring in the state over the last three months. The state government reported to the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that these suicides were predominantly from the Vidarbha region.

Taking to social media, the Congress MP highlighted the tragedy of the farmers' deaths to criticize the central government, labeling it as callous and unresponsive to their distress. He emphasized that 767 families have been irreparably affected, yet the government remains silent.

“Is this merely a statistic? No. These are 767 shattered homes. 767 families that will never recover. And the government? Silent. Watching with indifference,” he stated on X.

Rahul further lamented that farmers are increasingly burdened by debt every day, while the government turns a blind eye. Their demands for a guarantee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops remain unmet.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya swiftly countered Rahul’s claims with data about farmer suicides during the Congress-NCP administration.

Amit stated that the Congress leader should reconsider before making unfounded accusations. He pointed out the significant failures and mismanagement of the Congress-NCP governments, which were marked by a surge in farmer fatalities during their rule.

Providing statistics on farmer deaths, Amit revealed that over 55,000 farmers died during the 15-year Congress-NCP tenure and questioned, ‘Who was responsible for this?’

The graph he shared, compiled from data by the NCRB and P. Sainath, illustrated instances of ‘mass suicides’ across different government terms from 1999 to 2014.

“From 1999-2004, approximately 16,512 farmers took their own lives, while from 2004-2009, around 20,566 farmers did, and from 2009 to 2014, 18,850 farmers ended their lives,” he highlighted.

Significantly, the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra has gained notoriety over the years due to its alarmingly high rate of farmer suicides, consistently making headlines due to the dire circumstances faced by the agricultural community.

Rahul Gandhi escalated his critique of the central government, stating that farmers’ requests for loan waivers continue to be overlooked, while the Modi administration is more inclined to extend substantial loans to corporations and billionaires.

“Modi ji promised to double farmers’ incomes - today, the reality is that the lives of those who nourish the nation are being diminished. This system is decimating the farmers,” the Congress MP asserted.

In a firm rebuttal, Amit Malviya remarked that the politics of counting the deceased appears distasteful, but it is essential to hold a mirror to Rahul Gandhi and the Congress.

Point of View

It is essential to remain impartial in addressing the concerning issue of farmer suicides. While political parties exchange blame, it is crucial to focus on the farmers' plight and seek constructive solutions that ensure their welfare and security. The ongoing debates must prioritize the experiences of farmers and trust in the systems meant to support them.
