New Delhi, July 24 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday passionately endorsed the importance of English-medium education, asserting that it is essential for uplifting the weaker sections of society.
During a program where Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy presented the caste census in the state to Congress MPs, they highlighted the need for English education.
Rahul Gandhi emphasized that English is a critical factor for success and advancement in India, stating, “What is the single biggest factor that determines success for an individual in India? It is education in English - the single biggest determinant of success and progress in India. Meaning, an English education is much more powerful in India today.”
He challenged BJP representatives, asking, “If you inquire about the educational background of their children, do they attend an English-medium school? Yes or no? The answer will always be affirmative. So, why should the poorest individuals in India not have the same opportunity? Be it a Dalit, an Adivasi, or an OBC?”
Kharge remarked that a prosperous society requires economic strength, human capital, and mental acuity, asserting that without these elements, progress is hindered.
“In today’s world, the English language has become a necessity, and neglecting its promotion will lead to challenges ahead,” he cautioned.
The Congress leader noted that while some people desire their children to learn English, they deny the same opportunity to others.
“Leaders of RSS and BJP invest heavily in their children's education at elite schools. If the government uses public funds to educate less privileged children, what is the harm? Yet, they lack the intention,” he stated.
He praised Congress leaders in Telangana for their efforts on the caste-based census and urged that this model be adopted in other states to ensure people receive their rightful benefits.
Kharge mentioned that wherever Rahul Gandhi went, he emphasized the importance of a caste-based census, allowing the SC, ST, and OBC communities to obtain their rightful entitlements. “Since Rahul Gandhi began advocating for this, awareness among backward classes has increased, as their share is now being discussed,” he added.
He asserted that conducting a caste-based census does not disadvantage anyone. “I commend the execution of the caste census in Telangana. The work done by Rahul Gandhi must continue,” he stated.
“The way Rahul Gandhi traveled from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, advocating for the rights of SC, ST, and OBC, is unparalleled. He has focused solely on advancing the backward communities of our nation—economically, socially, and educationally—which is a monumental endeavor.”
Addressing the demand to eliminate the 50% reservation cap to permit 42% reservation for BCs, Kharge argued that this limit has already been surpassed, citing the PM Narendra Modi-led Central government’s provision of 10% reservation for economically and educationally backward individuals among upper castes.
He concluded by emphasizing that as the Scheduled Caste and Backward Classes unite to support Congress, they will exceed the 50% barrier.
